In other farm news, potato harvest is FINALLY complete! The boys finished up last week while I was out of town for a few days. It's a good thing too because the temperature outside has really started to drop. As I type, the boys are getting prepped to make some sauerkraut, so I apologize to you folks who I sadly informed that we wouldn't have kraut for the holidays this year. If all goes well, we should have sauerkraut for Christmas and New Years!
Pretty soon Mark will be on a roll harvesting field corn. There are some partial fields of what we call, "down corn," which are just stalks that have been knocked over by heavy winds and rains. It's been one of the most difficult growing seasons the farm has ever experienced. All in all we lost around 5 acres of potatoes because of flooding (we grow between 30-35). But when we hear stories about how much worse some of our fellow farmers are off, like the farm we buy seed potatoes from near Coudersport that lost about 20 acres, it makes us feel grateful. We had loss, but it can always be worse I suppose.
Lastly, I just wanted to thank all of our customers for sticking with us through this challenging year! Outdoor market season has officially come to a close, but the indoor season is shaping up to be a good one. You can find us all winter-long at The Boalsburg Farmers Market in St. John's United Church of Christ off of Church Street in Boalsburg. If I don't see you before, Happy Thanksgiving!
